Privacy policy
The short version: ShelfBee does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. Library availability lookups happen directly between your device and your library's servers. We have no backend, no analytics, and no accounts. Your reading habits stay yours.
Who we are
ShelfBee ("we," "us," or "our") is a Safari Web Extension for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, distributed through the Apple App Store. Questions can be sent to [email protected].
Information we do not collect
We do not collect, store, or process:
- Your name, email address, or any account information
- The books you browse or search
- Your library card number or library account credentials
- Your device identifiers or IP address
- Location data
- Browsing history
- Usage analytics or crash reports sent to us
How library lookups work
When you visit a supported book page, ShelfBee reads the page's book metadata (such as title and ISBN) and uses it to query your library's availability data via OverDrive/Libby's public endpoints. This request goes from your device directly to those services — it does not pass through any ShelfBee server, because we don't operate one.
Your chosen library is saved locally on your device using standard iOS/macOS system storage (UserDefaults and App Groups). This data never leaves your device.
Pages we can read
ShelfBee requests permission to read page content only on the specific websites it supports (such as Amazon and Goodreads). It reads book metadata only — not your account information, purchase history, or any other page content.
Third-party services
When ShelfBee performs a library availability check, your device communicates directly with OverDrive/Libby servers. That communication is governed by OverDrive's privacy policy, not ours.
We do not use any third-party analytics SDKs, advertising networks, or tracking services in the app.
Support correspondence
If you contact us at [email protected], we receive and read your email. We use this only to respond to your inquiry and do not store it in any external system beyond our email inbox. We do not share support correspondence with third parties.
Children's privacy
ShelfBee does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. The app contains no features that require personal data from any user.
Changes to this policy
If we ever change how the app handles data in a meaningful way, we will update this page and revise the effective date above. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
